Abstract: Summary of a paper given to OCLC by Professor Ia McIlwaine concentrating on the need for librarians to be aware of what is going on with regard to classification procedures in other disciplines, and to promote their own work more vigorously. The Dewey Decimal (DDC) and the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) schemes, are compared, focusing on their adaptability, and the argument made that they should be used in conjunction with each other rather than as competing systems. Emphasizes the need for to be more aware of other non-bibliographic systems of ordering information such as the UN Common Coding System.

Abstract: Several decimal classifications, with 10 main subject groups, have been created since 1700, showing variations in terminology and grouping. Many people regard Melvil Dewey as the true inventor of decimal classification. Dewey's achievements include using the formal 10 divisions, including 0, for basic classification structure and creating a universal classification framework. Dewey's work and UDC should be viewed in a historical concept sequence: future decimal classifications should avoid their weaknesses.

Abstract: The first mention of the decimal classification in Russian library literature occurred in 1895, and between 1895 and 1907, the system made little headway in Russia. In the few instances of its adoption during this period, the form used was usually UDC rather than the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The bibliographer, Bodnarskii, drew greater attention to the decimal system in 1908, and in 1911, a group of St. Petersburg librarians put forward their own decimal classification scheme for small Russian libraries. DDC also received some serious attention and after the 1917 Revolution appears to have been the most popular form in Russia. In early 1921, however, a government decree singled out UDC as the classification system to be used in all Russian libraries.

Abstract: Some general remarks on the classification of Melvil Dewey are presented for the centennial of its first publication in 1876. Similarities with the methods worked out by G. Schott in 1664 and with the principles of modern science of science are indicated. The measurable parameters which individualise the Dewey Decimal and the Universal Decimal Classification in the polydimensional semantic space are illustrated: monodimensional extension of the DC/UDC and decimal utilization density (DUD). The DUD of class 54 (chemistry) is calculated and is compared with the DUD of class 159.9 (psychology) being much smaller. A report is given on work being undertaken, in the field of philosophy, towards reconciliation of the UDC with thesauri (semantic correlation of concept spaces) and exemplification of a thesaurus-UDC (different from a UDC-thesaurus).
